Warrens / ISA Warrens...
« on: October 22, 2009, 20:44 »
Warrens / ISA Warrens... are they both the same kind of hen? I have read that ISA Warrens being hybrids stop laying over Winter. Our girls are Warrens and in my newbieness to hen keeping I'm still confuddled as to whether they are the same? I don't mind at all if they stop laying but it would be good to know if I should expect it as then I won't worry that there's something wrong with them

Yip, same breed. You may get the occassional egg. I have 5 warrens - two are ex-bat and three I got at POL in Feb. Only two are still laying now, one is an ex-bat the other one of the pol's. They do more than make up for it the rest of the year though, barely missing a day.

Thank you Caralou as that's cleared that one up for me  :) Yes they do lay so very well throughout the warmer months bless them. We still have three out of four laying at the mo so they are doing very well. At least I now know that when they do stop that it's perfectly normal.

Our 4 that we had (now two) did lay all through last winter and infact were great layers all round.  Now that the remaining 2 are nearly 2 years old one is still laying well, but we have had terrible problems with soft shelled eggs, which just came on suddenly.  Extra oyster shell and some cod liver oil in their feed everynow and again seems to be doing the trick.  The other one had a prolapse about 2 months ago and hasn't laid since.  I don't think that ISA Warrens have a terribly long laying life as they are bred to lay lots of eggs, but someone here may have different experience on this.  They are lovely girls though, very friendly, they follow me and my DB everywhere!
