What to Sow Now!
« on: October 11, 2009, 17:14 »
Hi All

We have just got the alllotment all prepared with wooden beds now and we are wondering what we can sow during the winter  We currently have only winter onions in and some cabbage plants....thats it!

We emptied it in the summer ready for the complete refurb which is now complete and it seems a shame to have it unused over the winter all exept a few onions.

Regards and thanks in advance

garlic, winter lettuce, jap onions, spring onions, broad beans, hardy peas, spring brassicas Or just give your soil a rest and feed it

As Paula said, give it a rest - at least most of it.

If you fill it up now, the stuff won't be out of the way when you want to spring sow/plant.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Go for some green manure. Try for Field Beans this late in the season, Mustard may still get going. strim and dig in in late Feb. Organic Gardening Catalogue use to have the beans.
Good luck

Its true, we have to remember that we expect a huge amount from our tiny piece of land, and we need to give it a bit of TLC. I did think about spring cabbages/caulies and have a  few in, but Im not doing onions, garlic etc.  My soil has paid dividends this year, so its time for me to repay the favour. Sorry if thats a bit soft, but thats what I think
