Rabbits.... need a shotgun!
« on: November 05, 2009, 09:26 »
I was so pleased my seeds were in (red and yellow chard, 3 different swede, white turnip, peas, cabbage and potatoes)  The chard had started to shoot within 4 days of sowing and the rest followed.  Now I am down to a few chard plants and 1 lot of swede.  There are rabbit droppings all about the peas >:(
Have ordered more peas and chard from T & M fingers crossed the rabbit won´t come back

You are going to have to net them!  Bunny has found a great salad bar .... :(

The rabbits will come back. If there are rabbits you really need to erect a wire fence.

Reducing the population helps but even one rabbit will destroy your young crops.  Shooting is OK if you have no neighbours who might object.

Wire cage traps are good. Put the trap out with the doors tied open for a few days and scatter some carrots or other rabbit goodies around and inside the trap. Once the rabbits are used to finding the carrots set the trap. You must be prepared to remove the rabbit from the trap and either kill, or release a very long way away.

If you lived closer, I could offer you vast quantities of ferret litter! The smell of it scattered around your plot would drive the bunnies away, though it might also drive away your neighbours! :tongue2:
