Hybrids do they lay through the winter?
« on: October 06, 2009, 17:22 »
Can anyone shed some light on this question?  We "our family" were told when we bought our hens that hybrids are the best as they lay through the winter.  Was this just a sales ploy?   We have 7 girls     5 of which were laying now we are down to two eggs every day from our copper maran and speckaldy. :)

Have they been wormed recently?  That's usually a reason.   Are they ok in themselves?

Sorry can't answer about the hybrids, but Copper Marans are a pure breed that do lay through the winter, but not quite as often as through the spring and summer (well mine do anyway  :) )

Yes they are wormed up to date.  The only change recently is we have now got them on layers pellets only over the last two weeks as they would NOT eat them at all before so we have moved them now on to pellets freely available all day.  They were so so fussy before and would queue up at the gate when they saw anyone in or around the house. Before with the kids feeding them corn and tit bits then spat out pellets and would not even look at mash.  We were advised that the pellets are good quality but making the feeding regime change would knock them off lay.

Hi,
Changing food does set them back a bit, different brands have different ingredients.
In a couple of weeks they should adapt to the new feed.

Yes, hybrids do lay through the winter. We have eight. Sounds like it could be the change in food that could have decreased the eggs.
8 chickens, 5 cats, 2 guinea pigs and 1 other half.

If your hens are molting they may not lay.
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!
