Really stupid question about garlic
« on: October 02, 2009, 17:59 »
I called in the garden centre on my way home form work looking for some new daffs and ended up with some over wintering onions and some garlic.

Obviously the garlic is sold in bulbs... now for the stupid question... do I plant the whole bulb, or do I break them into individual cloves, and plant the cloves?

Also do I need to strip the papery skin off, or do I leave it on?

I feel like such a muppet!

Glad you asked this question! My Dad gave me some garlic to plant today and I wasn't sure how to plant it.

Each separate clove that you plant will grow into a whole bulb.  Very clever  :D

Plant each of the individual cloves in an upright position 2cm (1in) below the soil surface. The bottom blunt end of the clove should be lowest in the ground with the pointed end just below the soil surface. Space each clove about 10cm (4in) apart. If you are planting rows, space each row 45cm (18in) apart.

Hope this helps?

As above, but my personal preference is to space them at 6 inch-intervals..... That way you can get the hoe in. ;)

I've never seen basic daffs here.  They are all "fancy" - either doubles, or multiple headed.  I do have quite a nice selection of fancy daffs and narcissi though, prices usually range from 2.50€ for 10 bulbs
