changing nest straw
« on: September 28, 2009, 11:07 »
I wondered if I was being a bit slutty because I haven't changed the straw in the nest box for weeks!(The rest of the coop gets poo removed every 3 days (it falls through the perches into trays) a clean every week and deep clean every couple of months)
It's a double box in an eglu cube and I fluff up the straw (checking for nasties) and puff Diatom in regularly. Any dry detritus falls through the ventilation slot and the straw isn't damp or dirty because it's only used for laying 3 eggs a day. (The girls all perch every night)
Is there a particular time period I should leave it before changing? It's not like us with clean sheets.....they don't appreciate it if their nest isn't how they left it!!!!

I use the 'clean' nest straw to put on the floor under the perches and put the new straw in the nest boxes.  I think as long as you replace the straw periodically you shouldn't have a problem.
