Toms....when to pick
« on: September 22, 2009, 08:45 »
I have a number of tom plants with lots of fruit all at different stages of ripening. Do you normally pick the ripe ones as and when you want them, or do you wait for the whole truss to ripen before harvesting?

Thanks in advance.

I pick them as they are ready, and everyone I know does the same

Oh, I have another question. I'm ripening some toms in my airing cupboard, some are reddy/orangey/green but are quite soft. Are these ripe enough or should I wait till they are fully red?

Cheers

Depends on your taste.  I dont mind mine slightly off colour.  They dont have to be fully red.  From the sounds of it they need eating soon if they are soft to the touch

So if they are soft, you need to eat them?

More for the sarnies then!

The whole ripe trusses you see in supermarkets have been ripened using eythelene gas. You won't get this naturally. If you wait for the last ones on the truss to ripen, the first ones will have gone over.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
