ha ha ideas thanks !! :D I have loads of bubble wrap was at one time selling stuff on e-bay so have a huge roll left over , the carpet that was dug up was in shreds  and frankly the idea of a rotten old bit of carpet does make me cringe (and that doesn't happen very often!!)
but the idea of of sandwiching the bubble wrap between some weed suppressing fabric is a good I dead I have a roll of that too!! I can make my own duvet !!
thanks folks I will let you know how it goes I might even take a photo !!
some people are like slinkys......they're really good for nothing, but they still bring a smile to your face as you push them down the stairs!!

my compost heap is made out of pallets. The 'roof' of my pallet is another pallet with a cover of black vinyl. I've picerced holes in it, so that some rain gets through or I can only slightly cover the whole heap if its really dry, and there is guttering that catches the torrential rain, that then goes into the water butt.

This seems to be a good compromise. I've lined the outside of the heap in carpet to try and keep some heat in. It makes for a f'ugly design feature. Thank god the carpet is the wrong way round to the eye, as it is 70s orange and brown swirls.

I wouldn't be too keen, as others have said, on having the carpet on the top.

You could always make a wooden frame with enough centre cross members and staple the bubble wrap to the top and sides.
Myself, I've just made a new series of bins, all the same size, and at the dump I found sheets of metal siding (for barns) exactly the size of my bin tops. So I'll make wooden frames cut with a slight angle for water runoff and nail the siding onto the frame. for moisture I either give it a short hosing down inside or leave it open during a rain, then close again to keep out critters.

mine is covered with old plastic groundsheet held down with bricks. I do have to water it every so often  to keep it moist.

Bubblewrap would be good, except for it letting light in and creating a greenhouse. I'd put something dark over it as well.

Something that came to mind while adding stuff to my compost bin this morning - keeping the heap dark attracts minibeasts which all do their bit to decompose the heap.  If you use bubblewrap, this will not happen so well as they tend to hide in the dark.

How difficult can it be to find a couple of carpet squares?

I would think that the woven weed suppresent fabric weighted down with bricks or logs would be the way to go.

I put bubble wrap in bin bags and then weight the bin bags down with bricks
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I can only do so much diy!!!!

Little do you realize that you are in a forum with a lot of DIY heavy power tools ladies. And they love it. Its the only way to get things done. Check any of your large box stores; they might offer courses for women in various power tool uses. Those stores do over here. They realized that the women controlled a lot of the money and DIY sense and now aim seminars and such towards them.
