Tin Shed for chooks ???????
« on: September 15, 2009, 09:44 »
We have decided to move our chooks to another part of the garden but their old sleeping quarter was once a childs wooden fort, which is a permanent fixure.  A while back someone gave us a new tin shed, my partner wants to use this for our girls, but I am not sure, has any one else got a tin chook house, and if so is it successful. Thanks Jx

would they not roast in summer, freeze in winter and get damp from the condensation?  ???
Staffies are softer than you think.

Our metal allotment shop shed gets a lot of condensation in the winter.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

As others have said, condensation is a problem in tin sheds.
I have one I thought the chickens would really enjoy as their old wooden coop was falling apart. Not a chance! They only ever go near it when it's raining during the day, so I'm having to renovate the wooden one for winter, then I'll try insulating the tin shed with polystyrene insulation-sheeting covered with some thin plywood on top of that.

One other thing about tin sheds...... Erect them on at least one course of bricks to keep it away from the ground to stop it rusting so quickly.

Hi Jezzie (and welcome),

as with the other replies I think you and your hens would  have too many problems with temp highs/ lows and especially condensation. I've seen plenty of damp in a steel shed, water running down the walls etc. We're new to keeping hens and still in the last stages constructing our wooden henhouse, good luck with whatever you decide.

Thank you all for your advice, I spoke to my partner and we will try and get a second hand shed and convert it. I did a chicken day at Empire Farm in Somerset a couple of weeks ago, very interesting, the couple that run it have made a coop out of re cycled rubber, which they are going to sell on the internet,  they are gong todo all different colours, Pink !!!!! green and black.  Might be worth a look.  They didnt say how much they were going to charge.

I have an 8ft by 6ft shed which is lined with Aluminium on the inside to a hight above the chickens. I have not had any probs with heat other than the normal problems and as there is plenty of air flow around the metal sheeting has been no condensation.

Photo of it just finished
