Autumn sown broad beans, peas, strawberries and potatoes.  Loved them all to bits - didn't plant nearly enough!

I think I may try a patch of sweetcorn for the first time...Are they worth the space?

My OH goes indoors at the merest wiff of barbecue...... the windows close and that's that... only to come out again to grab the washing before vanishing once more.... so it'll be steamed, I guess.

Yes,

it's one of those veg that must be eaten just after picking or the flavour deteriorates to that found in shop bought ones :tongue2:

I'm definitely growing Tumbler tomatoes again. I lost all my outdoor tomatoes to blight with the exception of  a single Tumbler tomato in a pot and it's been exceptionally prolific and the tomatoes are really tasty. No picking out of sideshoots or staking, just let it get on with it :)

I agree with titch, Learner, definately try the sweetcorn and don't forget to grow them in blocks not straight lines.  We grew  Swift this year and they have been marvellous with a top taste - in my case they didn't even make it to the kitchen, I ate them raw, so sweet, crispy and juicy - no need to cook!!

For us more peas and french beans next year and spuds - we're thinking of digging up a bit of the front garden and trying some spuds in there too.

"Cauliflowers,variety Candid Charm."

I second Candid Charm, I've had good results with that this year.

"and also more beetroot, cant seem to get enough of the stuff for some strange reason"

We didn't have enough from early sowings, and my successional sowings were ... errrmmm ... not very successional! So later sowings I have grown 3 plants per 9cm pot - whereas before I had one in the middle and a "spare" on the edge just-in-case the main one failed, and that was removed before planting out.

With later sowings I have grown 3 around the edge of the pot. Planted out at the normal spacing and two of the three pulled for early pickings.  That's given me more wiggle room on the successional bit :)

I'm going to plant more Sweetcorn, but successionally. I had previously thought it was hard to get a Sweetcorn crop to maturity in the UK - but I think that's just 'cause I haven't grown it for 10 years and the Breeders have sorted that problem in the meantime. I have grown Swift this year and had excellent results.

But we had a struggle to eat the cobs from 20 plants before the harvest period finished, so I'm going to try blocks of 9 sown 01-May, 15-May and 01-Jun - plus two crops 21-Mar and 7-Apr for the greenhouse - that was a great success this year.

Also Mini-pop corn for the kids - 7Apr and 21Apr to crop under glass and 01May and 15May outdoors.

"I think I may try a patch of sweetcorn for the first time...Are they worth the space?"

The Super-sweet variety "Swift" was a major success here this year - but only picked just at the time the chef was ready to boil them and had the pan on the stove already boiling. I have read that you can pick them and chuck them straight into a  bucket of water (outer cobs leaves still on) for 30 minutes then barbecue. Not tried that though.

My carrots were a fuss this year - slow to germinate and patchy. Sowed one row twice!
Now have remains fo 3 full 30' rows but carrots are smaller than usual - difference is I grew them on a "new" half plot that has hefty clay soil instead of my full-plot that has been worked by dear old dad for 50 years so soil is wonderful!!

More peas and french beans. I'm thinking of buying some more blackcurrant bushes - you just can't get decent fruit in the shops. I might dig up my loganberries to make the space. They are just thorns and jam.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

At last a sensible suggestion, Noshed

More beans, more carrots, more marrows .... you know you'll be fed up with em before the end of the season  :tongue2:  :tongue2:

Blackcurrants are the thing.
You can never have too many blackcurrants   :tongue2:  :tongue2:  :tongue2:

I used to hate Broad Beans, but planted a few just for OH (aren't I kind! ) and they were revelation - really yummy and not like the shop / frozen stuff.  So lots of them next year.
More Beetroot needed and I will try again at succession sowing so I actiually get to eat the lettuce.
Also need more Dwarf French Beans
trying to be green except when blue
