Potentially vulnerable brassicas???
« on: September 14, 2009, 19:54 »
Hi all,
I need to have a tidy up of my brussels sprouts, cabbages and swedes under their netting. For this to happen properly the netting needs to come off. I was wondering whether it would be foolish or wise to leave the netting off them. Have the cabbage white butterflies disappeared yet?
Thanks for your help,
Joe.

There are still CW butterflies around, so try to do it in stages where you only lift part at a time, perhaps.  Certainly replace the netting as soon as you can if you need to lift it all in one go.

Don't forget that pigeons will continue to eat the crops even once caterpillars and flutterbies are no longer active  >:(
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

You need good strong netting to keep the hungry pigeons off. They just sat on top of my netting last year and pecked the PSB all to bits, not to mention pooing all over it at the same time
The less time you have, the more becomes available.

Pigeons would be the problem - we've got them the size of ostritches  >:(

Ostriches??

When I were a lad , we had pigeons the size of pterodactyls.

Tell that to the gardeners of today, they don't believe you.

But yes, I've said before, I daren't take the nets off at all.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Pigeons?!? I went down to the lottie late the other evening, to drop off some bits, and every marker post had a pigeon roosting on it - just waiting for the sun to come up, so the beasts could start.....
