cockerel losing feathers
« on: September 17, 2009, 08:23 »
Hello, my cockerel seems to be losing feathers either side of his head, underneath his ears, i can see the long quills[if thats right]. I doubt he could do this himself, i've checked for lice, i'm almost sure the others aren't doing it, i'm baffled. It was his 6 month birthday yesterday so its not a proper moult. Anyone any ideas it seems to be getting worse as the week gets on?Thanks ???
We have 17 chickens, 3 quail, 2 dogs, 3 cats and that's enough (for this week)

Might be just a partial neck moult, or his final moult. One thing that does happen if he is with new girls they can tug on a cockerels hackle feathers and he will let them do this, it is odd but normal, sort of gesture of affection or something... :D

Thanks Foxy, think it must be the moult then, he's been with the girls all along, but they certainly aren't giving the poor boy much affection at the moment

bless him! perhaps they are not into toyboys!!!

This is going to sound really daft, if I have a tetchy cockerel on my lap, I gently tug his hackle feathers and it really seems to calm them down :D

, does sound a bit daft, but if it works.. and i'll remember that, thanks. :)
I am really pleased with the way Kaiser [my gold Brahma] is turning out, i' had a cockerel who turned very nasty on me, then i had Duke[Dark Brahma] who was completely loopy-rehomed and said to be fine. Now with Kaiser i think i've finally got a cockerel who is lovely natured, he's maturing lovely and i pray he stays that way come spring :)
