Orpington Eggs - shortage
« on: May 01, 2007, 08:30 »
I have a buff orpington and she is a love but not a regular layer, is this usual for Orpingtons.  She seems to lay on a very irregular basis, every other day at best but sometimes misses several days.

I got her from a traditional breeds auction so I dont know her age or history.  Is there any way to tell how old a chicken is?

Orpingtons are generally not the best layers - they seem to have had the "laying" bred out of them in favour of fluffiness. I am not sure about checking for the age of a hen. Pure bred hens do tend to lay for more years than "hybrid" hens who just get worn out after a couple of years.
