Autumn Onions and soil preperation
« on: September 09, 2009, 09:55 »
Bit early yet I know, but am starting to think about buying my sets in and where they are going to go.

Is there something I should/could  be doing to my soil in preperation? Was really pleased with the ones I put in last year but my soil is looking tired this year and I want to give it all a boost at some point but obviosly as the onions and the garlic are going in next month I wondered if there was something I could do now?  Thank you  :)

Some of mine are already in.

My method of prep is to dig over and rake nicely, and break up any big clods [we are on clay], and I add a bag of coffee grounds, a handful of epsom salts and mix them all in nicely.

What do you mean it looks tired? What sort of soil is it?

For me it is dig a trench, fill with weeds/cutting, then rotted compost,4-6 oz of bonemeal per sq yard recover with original soil. Plant sets in spring - mind you will get better results with seed started in january  :)

edit: apologies didn't appreciate OP was talking about overwintering onions. I read it as autumn, onions and soil prep.

All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

I've chucked manure in my onion bed and then read that they didn't like manure :nowink:

I manured mine last year and had good results this year so have manured it again ready for planting in a month or so.  I always thought as long as its rotted down enough then it'll be ok.

I put mine in this morning.

Put lots of my compost on from bottom of pile, raked it all in until it was fine and deep.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Mine won't go in until October.

I won't put much into the bed as nutrients can leech out over winter while the onions are sitting there doing nothing & not needing them.

Once they start to move on spring, I'll give them a good dose of chicken manure pellets, my spring planted sets loved them this year.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks for all the replys, lots to chew over there!

What I ment by my soil looking a bit tired, I suppose I mean it has no substance to it in places, it is a bit dry and dusty. Just looks like it needs some tlc  :)
