Strawberries
« on: September 03, 2009, 17:44 »
Hello everyone ,we are new to the forum.
I have a question. About a month ago I cut the leaves down on my first year strawberry plants after they had fruited. But now they have all grown back and still throwing out runners. Do I cut them back again or leave them? Did I cut them back too early? Can any one help out there?!!!

I would leave them as they are probs putting their energy into the runners and making you new plants - if they want to give you more plants i'd let them  ;)
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Good evening Magandsi, why are you cutting the leaves off anyway? The plant needs to send out runners so that you have plants that will fruit the year after next.

When the days get colder and shorter, the leaves will start to die back, that will be the time to give your strawbs a short back and sides,

I'd say Beansticks is right.

I let all my 1st year strawbs fruit cutting any runners off beforehand so that the plants concentrate on fruit production.

After they'd finish, I let them go a bit nuts with the runners etc but will trim right down when the leaves start to die off.

Most people don't take plants of the runners until the 3rd year to replace the plants, unless you're making new beds.
Top tip for camping....don't go.
