I've been happily assuming that my soil was acidic, I based this on the weeds I have, creeping buttercup, dandelions, docks and nettles to mention a few. Today I found my test kit (which was buried in the "really useful things" box) and tested the soil.

According to this its 7.5 - 8 (green with a blue tint)    :blink:  I guess this explains my scabbed spuds then, that'll teach me not to check the obvious.  Bad news is Im going to have to fanny about preparing a acid bed for the blueberry bushes I've just ordered

If you want to change the soil from alkaline to acid, use Flowers of Sulphur. Available from the chemist. Also, don`t trust these shop bought testing kits too much. Plants can test the soil better than you can.

Did you test the soil in just one place or lots of places?

Could just be a rogue result if you only tested in one place, as DavidT says

Oh maybe I need to test my potato bed againg cos scab was a big problem this year here. Thanks for jogging my memory!

I always thought those weed plants were an indicator of fertile wet soil, not acid.

To do a soil test using the chemical test kits. You need to dig a hole about 4inches deep and take the sample from the bottom of the hole. Do this from 5 areas of the plot, 1 from each quarter and the fifth from the middle. mix all the samples together and test. The result will give you an average PH/NPK reading for the plot. One golden rule, you MUST wear gloves so as not to contaminate the samples.
