Frontlining chickens?
« on: August 31, 2009, 07:59 »

I see that someone recommends using frontline for red mite infestation on chickens.

Can anyone help with dose needed, and also whether or not using it affects egg production?

I've also just read that DEFRA is working on a vaccine against the blighters....

hi , do you mean lice,? because i dont think frontline would work on redmite as they live in the coop and not on the bird! :D

I use Frontline on my hens and I just squirt a Cat's pippet on the base of their neck by threir shoulder blades.  They have not had any problems with any beasties!
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

hi nicky...i ate my girls eggs and we are still here! ...but like ive said before everyone in my house is used to my cooking so their stomachs can probably cope with most things  :wub:he he he
i put 2 drop onto the back on the neck(part the feathers and put it on the skin) of the smaller chickens and 3 drops onto the larger girls.
im a bit confused about the red mites tho...how does frontline stop them biting, and if this is true would it not be simple to get rid of them?(sorry, im new to chicken keeping)
i know frontline works well on the scaley leg mite, but didnt know it worked on red mite  :)

We've never had any trouble with any of our eggs.  They still taste yummy and no one has had any ill effects.  I sell my eggs at work and there have never been any complaints there either.  I swear by Frontline.  The hardest bit is catching the hens!

I have had a lot of problems with scaly leg mite and have been dipping my girls feet in surgical spirit- seems to work but I like the idea of using frontline sounds alot easier. Do you just puts a couple of drops on their neck like you would a dog?

i don't think it will stop the mites biting, they'll just die afterwards, so unless all the redmite have a feast at the same time, you'll still have redmite.....................

thanks TMG...i thought as much....mother hen, i just put 2drops onto the SKIN (part the feathers) of the back of the neck, but if its a large chicken you may need 3-4 drops x
some people advise to put it under the wing...dont do this, its not good for the chicken :D
