I have a couple of Boston Squashes that are getting enormous.

Is there any reason I shouldn't pick them yet or is it best to let them mature on the vine until the leaves die away (by which time I expect they will be the size of my garden).

I usually let the vine start to die back before harvesting as I know the decent fruit will be mature.

If you want to eat one straight off, no reason why you shouldn't harvest one.

With butternut squash you get a change in colour, as they ripen they get lighter and i cut them off a few days after.
I have never tried growing Boston squash so will be interested to hear a report when you try the first one. According to google you can eat them raw.

I'm at a similar point. The things i've read suggest that in general the longer on the vine the better for flavour, so i'm holding off harvesting for a while.

I have tried raw butternut squash and its tastes like melon, a fairly tough melon

Quetzal, that's how ours look.  We have sowed mixed squash and have eaten a few already in a curry and roasted in chunks with skins on - delicious!
