Weird egg laying
« on: August 23, 2009, 13:16 »
Please can anyone help?
Phyllis (30 weeks) has always been a bit of an erratic layer but recently things are worse. She has laid some hard (but sometimes rough, creased and pointy) eggs this week in the morning like the others and one or more are huge. In the past week or more she has laid 4 soft eggs in the night (I know because I've got a cube and the poo (and egg) drop through.) She has also laid a hard egg on the same day once and the huge eggs the NEXT day are double yolkers.
When I found the first softie I thought it was because she wasn't eating enough pellets. She is the dominant hen and hogs any treats, so now they have pellets and grass in the run, freerange from 1-6ish and have greens and corn as treats to get them back in! This seemed to work and she laid her normal medium egg for two days. Then I had alternate soft and hard. There is always oyster grit available and she must be eating it to lay the hard eggs?
I wonder if she's upset? I've had some work done in the garden, first fencing (week before last) then tree felling (Friday) and this started about the same time? I think I'm answering myself here!!! ::) :)
How long will it take for her to readjust her laying?

If she is new to laying it may take some time to get it right.  My Maran went a similar route when she started laying.  Then she went broody . . . . .
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

She has laid 2 eggs today again...one medium with a soft shell last night and a medium  hard, rough and only half coloured one late morning. That's 9 eggs this week!!!! :ohmy:Weird or wot? :nowink:

She does seem to be having problems settling down but don't be tempted to start changing her diet or force feeding additional oyster shell.  Feed titbits sparingly and in the evening a have a good quality layers pellets available as the staple diet ad lib.

It's probably a reaction to the disruption she will eventually settle down.
