HOT BED
« on: April 26, 2007, 19:27 »
I have followed Monty Don and made a small raised hot bed with a barrow load of horse poo layered with grass cuttings - I'll turn this over a few days and cover with multipurpose compost.
I'm going to try to grow sweet potatoes ........ I'm looking every day in the greenhouse for any slips to appear as explained on this forum.
And I will try just burrying some tubers in the hot bed under black teram through burnt holes (which I did successfully with spuds on a reclaimed bog area)
Can anyone suggest any other semi-tropical veggies I could try in the same bed      :?:  :D

...I know that some of his advice is a bit dodgy but to call his tips a 'barrow load of horse poo', whilst accurate, it is not exactly respectful.

Well, having found a handy stables, I was up there again early this morning and back with another load and used this to start off my compost heap, together with grass cuttings from our home garden.
Meanwhile the hot bed is warming up nicely :D  :D  Is there any danger of spontaneous combustion? Perhaps I should invest it a thermometer
