blight
« on: August 16, 2009, 19:52 »
i noticed the dreaded brown patches on a couple of my tomato plants. :(

the other plants looked OK so i just stripped out the affected plants and left the rest.

tell me, is it possible to come back from the brink or am i going to go back tomorrow to find the whole lot gone?

i am reluctant to spray with bordeaux mixture (pregnant and pretty sure that ingesting copper sulphate isn't recommended)

Congratulations  :) :)
Shame about the blight though. I think Bordeaux mixture is supposed to be the safest treatment, and while if the toms are washed before eating there shouldnt be any danger, I dont think theres any point in taking a risk for a few tomatoes.
Of course, you could spray the remaining plants, and not eat them yourself  ;)

I've resisted using Dithane - lost the outside crop again but still trying to avoid using too many chemicals...

But if I made a choice between Dithane and bordeaux mixture I'd definitely go for Dithane. It does not leave any residule in the soil as far as I know...so is safer.

(Thank heavens for my greenhouse tomato crop!)  ;)

came back from hol to find what looks like blight on most of my toms in the ghouse - but many looking OK still, so am planning on seeing how many I can harvest before stripping out and cleaning the whole place...

Sorry to hear that savbo..... it's getting a bit bad, to say the least, if blight's even managing to get into greenhouses!

I have had some leaves in my greenhouse and outside show brown ends and curling but I just gut off the infected leaves, branches and the fruit is not affected. I am not throwing any away.

A terrible year despite being told (yet again) we are going to have a heatwave. Nearly Autumn and still no ripe tomatoes, even in a greenhouse.

I have had the dreaded blight on my greenhouse tomatoes.  have got rid of most of the plants - managed to salvage a couple.  These were grown in big containers in the greenhouse.  Do you know if the soil can be reused for toms next yr?  It seems such a waste to throw it all away.  Is there anything I can mix into the soil to get rid of any blight spores that could be remaining?
I also live in Cheshire - apparently the heatwave is going to be Tues/Wed of this week?????

You cant reuse the soil as the spores stay around to damage next years crop too.  You need to use a fresh lot

I've got the same problem. :( I've got to clear a few old raspberries, I will clear the area of perennial weeds, dig a bl**dy big hole, and deposit all the spent compost in that, and cover it all back up, before replacing the rasps.
