Blight and Sarpo Mira Potatoes
« on: August 11, 2009, 11:00 »
As you may be aware from another thread, I found some wizened left over seed spuds in the shed, which I recently planted. From the state of them I couldn't tell what varieties they were, just one or two of any sort I planted.

As expected, some have succumbed to blight, (6 of the 8 ) - but it's interesting to note the difference between them and the now identifiable Sarpo Mira.

Sarpo Mira

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I am growing sarpo mira and king edwards as main crop
The difference is amazing, kings are almost dead, sarpo had a small amount of what I think was blight but I cut it off and they are looking really healthy

I like to try different varieties, but always grow Sarpo as a fail-safe.

One day I'll learn to stop experimenting.

I have used Sarpo Mira for he first time this year due to blight in the previous two years.
I can happily report that i have never had a potato plant look so lush and tall(waistheight) and hope that this means a good yield.
What's the flavour like on this variety and what do they cook like - anyone have any views?

I have always grown Sarpo Mira and always free from blight.  Also grew some King Edward this year which were fantastic so far.  The Sarpos do not mash well, but are good baked.
