Electric fence - tips on keeping grass down
« on: August 18, 2009, 08:35 »
Hello

Just got back off my hols, the electric fence is working a treat but I am finding that as the grass grows very quickly there is constant clicking going on.
I have installed some extra poles as the ground is not totally flat, it has helped, but our lovely weather being what is is I cant cut the grass every week.
I dont want to put any chemicals down that might harm the chickens, any ideas

Thanks Jo

glyphosphate type weed killers are safe once dry.  Is there any way you could spray while the chooks are in their shed and let them out later?

I think some people use the black plastic strip stuff that is used for damp proof courses (sorry not sure what its called  ), but it is available from builders merchants  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

DPC - damp proof course!  Very good for this purpose though :)

Hi
I have electric fencing for the horses, the chickens just roam free. I have to use a strimmer under it every 4 or so weeks but this is the tape, so off the ground.
I'm taking it that you have the netting and not the tape.
Putting the plastic down makes it more permanent and if your like me I like to move it round the paddocks giving fresh grass and then allowing it to rest.  :)

Thank you

Spent hours yesterday mowing and re-arranging fencing :(
So I went to the local DIY and bought a couple of rolls of the damp proof tape stuff, thanks for the tips :)
