If 'broadcast' is the problem, it's refers to scattering of the seed over a wide(r) area, rather than in straight rows.

I used to grow in pots, then tried transplanting out when weather allowed with much better results, the leaves are hardier and grow better and stronger but only if you pick the leaves at first the way you would `pinch out`,after a few weeks,as the plants bushed out I took stems back a fair way as long as there were 2 leaves left to regrow, this seems to work better than taking small amounts,I didn`t try it until I read an article by  Jekka McVicar.

I'm growing (and selling like hot cakes!) Thai, lemon, cinnamon, lime, sacred, genovese, minette, mammoth (the best!) and purple basil! (excuse spelling!)

I've grown Thai Holy Basil but have not eaten it. It is very pungent....smells very medicinal/perfumy...very overpowering, think it might be too strong for cooking but it's great for keeping aphids at bay. :)
