Onion disease
« on: August 07, 2009, 16:26 »
I am not new to vegetable growing but have been disappointed this year with my onion crop. After storing I have found that every onion has rotted from the core. There was no outward sign of any problem except a bit of 'rust' which appeared in July.
Has anyone any idea of what the cause may have been? I cannot find any reference to the 'disease' so I am thinking I have caused the problem.
Any advice appreciated.
John

Good evening John and welcome to the site. Were the onions properly dried before storing? If they rotted from the inside outwards then it sounds to me like a form of neckrot.

I thought I had dried them sufficiently but they did get quite wet after lifting on the drying rack!
Do you think that every one of them would be affected?

If it is my fault I will be happier than thinking I have some bad ground!

The golden rule with storing onions is drying drying drying - even when they are dry!  If the neck was slightly damp then it would encourage any bacteria in, and hence rotting.  Especially in these warm but wet days

Another thing is if the onions had gone to seed the stem produced will rot and therefore rot the rest of the onion, it is always best to use these first or if you have room chop up the onions and put them in the freezer.
