Washed or unwashed?
« on: August 04, 2009, 23:50 »
I will be digging up my blighted desiree and pink fir apples in a couple of weeks to see if they are fit to store (finger tightly crossed).  Flicking through John's book, the advice is to rinse the potatoes then leave in the sun (chance would be a fine thing) for a day to harden.  But i'm sure i've read elsewhere to leave them unwashed.  What does everyone else do??

I washed mine and just left them on the shed floor to dry, that way I can see what has been got at, and what is bad.
I hope yours are blight free - good luck

Dig them up, dry them for a couple of hours and then store them.

I don't wash mine but clean off as much soil as possible. Not bad when its been dry but with all this rain mine will either come up ready washed this weekend or covered in mud! and that has reminded me that I have some drying lin the greenhouse and totaly forgot them :nowink:

Same here, dig, dry in sun for only a few hours, chip off any dirt clumps and store unwashed. They can be washed if you're fussy, but its a lot of extra bother when so many other jobs are waiting.

I wash mine by putting them in a bucket with some water and just stirring them round till they are clean. Easy and quick. That way you can use up the damaged ones ASAP and store the rest once dry.
Some years I have left a half row of late potatoes, Axona, in the ground covered with extra earth and a tarpaulin for digging up in March or April, when any stored potatoes are starting to shrivel.
