Sorry to hijack this thread, but I am concerned. Am I right in thinking that Diatoms doesnt kill redmite? One of my hens has this little bug, I think I have identified it correctly, So I jeyes fluid the house the used Diatoms. Should I get something else? I read on here somewhere that a local farm offers a redmite erradication service for £25,  Should I consider this? ( I only have three hens) Thanks Tatty

I use both poultry shield and diatom, with the poultry shield you blast it into all the nooks and crannies, it them leaves a residue which helps with the prevention of red mite. Every time I clean out my hens I use diatom - I puff it onto the floor and walls and their bedding - I think this works by drying out any little critters  >:(. It is up to you if you take the local farm up on their offer but think it works out a lot cheaper to do it your self (5 litres of poultry shield is less than £20 - you can also buy it in a smaller 1 litre size - and you have enough to treat several times over and the low pressure sprayers from b*q are not expensive either). Jeyes will not eradicate red mite and if one hen has it then all will.
