Hi Everyone!  My broody hen has been on her eggs since Sunday, and today I noticed that she had poked a hole in one of them.  She isn't able to roll a bad egg out because of the rim my husband put up.  Do you think it was on purpose or an accident?

She must have known that it wasn't going to grow and if she couldn't push it out this must be her way of telling you. Vember, Foxy, Joyfull et al were great when I was having chook egg panics - coooeeee, girls are you around??? - it was explained to me how if my girl was still sitting tight on all my eggs she must have been able to feel them and know that they would hatch and if not she would have moved them out of the coop and between them they know just what to do - my little lifelines they were

Hi LittleRedHen, She must have known it was no good and was probably trying to eat it to remove any evidence, (this is what a lot of animals do in the wild if they or their young run the risk of being threatened). One of mine kicked an egg out and another hen ate it for her. If the egg had gone bad it could have infected the others so by removing it she is doing the right thing. Dont worry your hen will stay put on her eggs as long as she feels any movement in them - nature is a wonderful thing
