silver dorkings
« on: July 22, 2009, 23:44 »
Hi my 4 chicks are now 3 weeks old and it looks like I have got at least 3 males :(. I have read that they make good meat birds and need to know at what age they will be ready to eat? and will it be before they start to crow ? This is of course if I don't manage to find good homes for them :).

If you have silver dorkings then you should have been able to tell what sex they where from hatching.

Color sexing Silver Grey Dorking day-old chicks: pullet on the left

You can legally cull the bird for meat on the 56th day!!!
I managed to give mine away in there 5th week and therefore I can only tell you that about 10 weeks ish most Cockerels will start to crow. But not loudly or constantly.  I would think it will take at least till there 16 weeks old before you could get a meal out of them.
