Little ducky just won't grow :-(
« on: July 21, 2009, 20:08 »
Hi all!

We have five Aylesburys and they are all loved equally but one just isn't growing!
They are 8 weeks old and this little one is still the size of a three week old.
When we bought her, she was smaller and our breeder pointed it out but we didn't mind. She isn't being bullied, has a fair share of everything and seems to be happy enough but is so small. We've called her tiny and decided to keep her and not put her to the chop.
But is there anything we can do?

Thanks

Carrie

Awww! I think sometimes they are just small Grannie has a tiny goldline that is half the size of the others! i believe thats how bantams came about by breeding from the ones that stayed small! and it obviously has some benefits cause she now gets to be your pet!  ;)

The world famous "Titch" was always a week or so behind her siblings but caught up eventually and now has offspring of her own, all of which are healthy and normal sized. :)

Just keep her fed and watered and she'll probably be the boldest of the lot (especially after the 'deed' is done :D

Liskeard, my Light Sussex chick - via an e-bay egg from Liskeard, Cornwall - is tiny compared to the ones I bought in at 3 - 5 days old.
Liskeard is now 4.5 weeks old and 1/4 their size.  He eats and drinks well, gets covered by the 10 bigger ones at the feed dish when I replenish it, and darts about so fast, his energy must be going into his busy life instead of growing.
He (hopefully, I am wrong on sex there) will not go to the table either.

I too think that what they lack in size they make up for in character!  :D take Jack russels for instance! I have some little  bantams in with a welsummer and a pheasant fowl who are not only bigger than the banties but are a couple of weeks older! and it is the little banties that pick on the big girls  they just have to stand on tippy toes!!
