I have no idea how long the list is mind you.

I have only asked for a half one.    Any hoots fingers crossed that I get one before I retire eh?  :nowink:

I've been looking through some of the piccies of the allotments on here, (and sighing a fair bit too).

You've heard about section 23 of the 1908 Allotment Act, and unfortunately it's never quite as simple as the headline report  :(

Section 23 states that if a council is of the opinion that there is a demand for allotments, it shall provide a sufficient number of them to persons resident etc.

It also states that when 6 registered voters write to the council to the effect that the council does have a duty to provide allotments, the council must take those representations into consideration.

Therefore the council has to think about, but is not dictated to, by the request.  (NB I did the bold, it's not in the Act).

The inevitable argument is what is a 'sufficient' number.  A council cannot provide an infinite number of plots, bearing in mind that such demand fluctuates greatly over relatively small periods of time.  Also bearing in mind that acquisition of land is time-consuming and costly, and your council has to fund child care, repair roads, and other more essential public services too.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

philskin is trying to nudge the council into forming a new lotty and is meeting them to discuss so he would be the best person to talk to at this stage ;)

It will be well worth the wait, should up it to a whole plot though as we have just gone to two as one isnt enough, these allotments are addictive, better than drugs or drink and keeps hubby out of trouble  :D

Where I live there is a long waiting list for an allotment, so I put a note on the noticeboards asking if anyone wanted to share.  Low and behold a lady with a huge plot has agreed to let me use a small section of her's.
