Are my peas ready ?
« on: April 20, 2007, 08:58 »
I started my pea seeds off in the greenhouse and they are now about 3 inches high with tendrils - are they ready to plant outside yet, and should I harden them off first ?

Hard to say because your Profile doesn't say where you are.

Sorry, I'm in Staffordshire, and although it has been really warm lately, I'm not sure we are frost-free yet

Personally I think anything coming out of a greenhouse needs hardening off, else you may get a check in growth. But a 3" high they want planting soon.

I would get them planted out asap and cover then with fleece to provide a bit of overnight protection initially.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.

A little frost can be held off with a fleece so harden them off ASAP and get them outside.   An open coldframe for 3 or 4 days is a good way; close it at night.

Thanks for the replies, it's pathetic really, but I am so excited about them - out of 60 seeds, I have 57 plants, and that is from a cheap 19p packet of Netto seeds.

I bought Thompson and Morgan peas and have had less than 40% germination, I know where I will be buying next year

I'm planting my gutters of peas out this week end.  They are about 3" tall  and well hardened off.  I'll cover them with a chicken wire cloche to keep the birds off and some mouse traps to stop the mice digging them up
