Hi all

I'm brand new to keeping chickens and have had my 5 hens and a cockerel for just over a week (getting some ex batts next month) I've been reading this forum for a couple of days and have already had many tips

I'm wondering how many eggs a hen would lay in a day?? as I think that on a couple of days I've had two from one hen....is this possible or is it generally one per day !!! I know you'll excuse my lack of knowledge and I'm having so much fun with them

It depends on the breed, some will lay one egg a day and others will only lay 4 or 5 a week. There will be the odd time when you may get two per day from a hen but generally an egg takes 25 hours to be produced.

Are they young hens mischief? young hybrids are more likely to mistime their laying initially

No idea how old they are I'm afraid as they were rescued !!!

Hi.
Yesterday my last visit to my hens was at 4pm,went to them this morning just before 9am and have 6 eggs from 5 hens?
I am shocked  a nice shock!!!
How can this be?

I think when hen are in a battery under artificial light they have a different day length ie less than 24hrs for  a day/night cycle to maximise production. It may take ex-batts a while to get out of this routine and stop popping out an extra egg.
