How many eggs will alhen lay per day ?????
« on: July 27, 2009, 19:10 »
Hi all :)

I'm brand new to keeping chickens and have had my 5 hens and a cockerel for just over a week (getting some ex batts next month) I've been reading this forum for a couple of days and have already had many tips :)

I'm wondering how many eggs a hen would lay in a day?? as I think that on a couple of days I've had two from one hen....is this possible or is it generally one per day !!! I know you'll excuse my lack of knowledge and I'm having so much fun with them :)

It depends on the breed, some will lay one egg a day and others will only lay 4 or 5 a week. There will be the odd time when you may get two per day from a hen but generally an egg takes 25 hours to be produced.

Are they young hens mischief? young hybrids are more likely to mistime their laying initially :)

I think when hen are in a battery under artificial light they have a different day length ie less than 24hrs for  a day/night cycle to maximise production. It may take ex-batts a while to get out of this routine and stop popping out an extra egg.
