MySick Hens
« on: July 15, 2009, 09:13 »
Would anyone be able to help me.  I brought 5 hens about 10 weeks ago here in spain.  I believe now I got them all with coccidiosis but being a first timer have only just realised what has been wrong with them and have been giving them some treatment in their water.  How long will it take for them to recover and start laying eggs, I have had no eggs since I bought them at point of lay.
And also one of my hens sits with her bum in the air all day long and has a very dirty bum,has anyone any idea what could be wrong her bottom also looks a bit sore.

Thanks for any help.

I have not had coccidiosis perhaps if you explain the symtoms others here may be able to advice as your a first timer.
I know its been very hot in spain freinds live there have they enough shade and good supply of water.
As for the bum if you wash it in warm water and hair shampoo ( gloves on just in case) to get all the muck off rinse with clean water and dry it you will be able to see if its lice, maggots etc.

snowflake coccidiosis is normaly blood in the poo and is fatal in the very young. Normally in young birds that have not had exposure e.g. just come out into the big wide world from a brood area.  Gloves?????

How old in weeks are your chickens?
Have they laid any eggs since you have had them?
What have you been giving them in there water and where did you get it from.

Photos of the bum (on the chicken) would be helpful.

Thanks for all you help.  coccidiosis symtoms go somthing like this:  Poo in blood not eating and drinking much even though it is really really hot( they have 3 supplies of water in all the places they lay plus lots of shade), they huddle together all day and night and hardly peck around for anything.  These are some of the symtoms I read about on the internet which my hens also show.  I have no way of taking them to a vet as I will probably be laughed out of the door as the treat their chickens as poorly as they treat their cats.  Only one hen has ever layed the other 4 never have, but now she has stopped.  I don't know for sure how old the hens are i got them 10 weeks ago and i was told they were point of lay.  I will post a photo shortly of the bum and hopefully someone will be able to help, how do I tell if she has lice or worms would I be able to see them?

Back soon with a photo.

Smelly :(
