what to grow??
« on: April 24, 2007, 19:56 »
Right as you know I have a plot for the 1st time and I also have a nice sized veg patch at home... but I am starting to wonder what I can grow, as I don't want to grow cabbage/cauli/turnips.

So far I have on the list either in, or ready to go in after the chance of frosts

Onions
spuds
Broc
carrots
sweetcorn
artichokes globe and Jerusalem
various herbs
salad stuff
chillis by the dozen
toms - various
garlic
various flowers
beans - runner and err other ones I cannot think of at the mo
butternut squash
courgettes
pumpkins
watercress

so what else do you grow? As my plot will only be half full...

hi Sadgit I just got a new plot too. Me and my mate have planted 3 beds of asparagus and one of fartichokes, and lots of maincrop potatoes so far. Have got winter brassica waiting until the charity shops come up with some net curtain and Nature comes up with some rain, and beans for drying - I grow Fench and runner at home - and chrysanths and sunflowers for cutting. Also will let squash and pumpkin run riot there. The plan is, not to have to go every day in summer so no lettuce or stuff like that.
Planning to green manure every bit we don't use.

when I get my plot (sometime in the next decade) I am planning similarly, to grow salady stuff at home and less needy stuff at the allotment.  once I get this piece of land (I keep dreaming) I will expand my current vege/ plot (in my garden) into mainly fruit with a bit of salad.

This year I have strawbs, raspberries, gooseberry, blackberry, carrots, radish, sprouting brocoli, early and main spuds, peas, french beans (yet to go out), spinach, several different salad lettuce, spring onions, white and red onions and giant garlic.  Sounds a lot given I only have aabout 25 square yards but I only have a little of each thing, certainly nothing close to self sufficient in these veges!  If I didn't have small people playing in the garden I'd just dig that up like my neighbours have and expand at home!
