loose cauli heads
« on: July 02, 2009, 09:13 »
Hello all

can anyone tell me how I stop my cauliflower heads from going all loose? is it watering, ground firmness, leaving them too long????

Thanks
R

If they were tight and have grown loose I think they have "gone over" - but don't qote me lol I haven't grown a cauli successfully yet ;)

Mine are a bit lose but still only tennis ball size someone gave me advice to start using the biggest and so should end up with some decent size ones by the end.

Casey's right.

If they're starting to go loose, they are going over and should be used ASAP, don't hold on hoping they will get bigger. Well actually they will get bigger, but looser and looser as they run to flower and seed.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If they blow, let them grow on a bit more then harvest the stems (you'll need to peel them, but that's dead easy) because they are surprisingly tasty. I did that with my caulis after they blew (my fault, I should have picked them small) and I'm seriously thinking of growing more just for the stems.
