« on: June 28, 2009, 23:00 »
hi there.  ive been thinking about getting an eglu (just the house) in the future but wanted to know what peolpes opinions on the roosting situation is as the roostin g bars are not reaaly raised - does this cause any stress to the hens? - i read somewhere that their nesting boxes should be below roost level and i think they are bothe on the same level in the eglu? - excuse my terrible spelling and typing (using sons laptop without a mouse and i can hardley cope omg!) would love to hear your viesw!

My happy hens have lived in an eglu for 4 years.  I'll ask them tomorrow if they find it stressful  ;)

thankyou aunt sally! but seriously though you obviously are pleased with it? - it is so different to what we are usecd to seeing as a hen house - mine is a traditional little wooden one on stilts like my grandpa had! i dont think i have heard any bad comments about the eglu and i know it has won awards - but yes if you could please confirm with your ladies tomorrow i would be grateful! thanks.

    All hen houses were/are designed by humans with the materials available at the time so a wooden one is what most people imagine for a hen house.

As far as I can tell the are completely happy in their plastic coop.  They certainly enjoy how easy it is to keep clean and sweet smelling.  How cosy it is in the winter and how cool in the summer :D

We have an eglu Cube.  Our chickens have slept in the egg box almost from day one. I thought it might be cos they're ex-batts, but we've just got some POLs to add to the flock and they have "taken over" the egg box at night.

I've been wondering whether to close off the egg box to force them out into the roosting area.  But not sure how necessary it is to do that ... they seem very content I have to say.
