Candeling eggs?
« on: June 29, 2009, 12:38 »
My broody has been sat on her 5 eggs for 1 week today! Haven't really explained to the children what is going on as don't want to get them eggcited if none hatch. Is it ok just to let her be or should I check the fertility of the eggs?

I'd have a look at them if I were you.  Otherwise you've all that waiting and possible heart ache @ the end.  Where is if they're dud now you can discard them and either pop some other ones under or try to break her now!

I just went into the run with a torch after dark & candled them, so easy peasy and no fuss.

Good luck and how eggsiting!

I would do the same.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

My kids were amazed to be able to see inside an egg and to see the little veins and a bit later on the chick moving.  I did have to discourage them from candling every day mind!!  ::)

Well I finally plucked up courage to take a look at my eggs, having looked at pics on the internet pretty sure I knew what I was looking for and I was pleased to see what I think was 4 eggs with the red veins and movement, the last one I wasn't sure about but have popped all 5 back under mommy, should I be checking them again?

Great news that 4 look viable  :D I'd leave them be now until hatching day, but that's just me being paranoid about moving them too much . I just did mine at day ten and to be honest despite being white shelled they were difficult to see , so have left them all with mum and will just wait to hatching day to know for sure ::)
