Hen Help Please!
« on: July 02, 2009, 10:05 »
Right slightly concerned as we just lost one hen but another hen Potchy started showing same signs of illness as the other :( She was up in the nest box before bedtime last night and the other girls were out freeranging so brought her out but she went back in again...which just is'nt like her! She was sleepy and when making her way back looked very weak almost limping???? This morning she is sleepy and laying in the bottom of run with her head tucked under her wing. Her wings also looked dropped down when walking. Her poo's are watery and one was green???? I have'nt seen her drink or eat either this morn. She's just not herself and i think we are looking at some sort of virus to be honest. Can anyone help?

Have you wormed your birds recently?
Green poops can be a sign of worms :(

Think your best bet would be to get her seen by a vet, if it is a virus it could/will spread through your other birds

you might be right with a virus, I am starting to suspect Mereks disease, didn't the other hen have a dropped wing too?
What breed are they? Are they hybrids, and if so were they vaccinated?

Hi Foxy, their ex battery hens if thats any help rhode island red i think?? We were told they are vaccinated anyway being battery hens? I'm in total confusion as i've being looking at possible different causes and theres so many out there  I came across Ulcerative Enteritis which is my top suspect as symtoms match so there may be a trip to the vets tomorrow if shes not looking any better. She,s had some food now as i've seen her!

I think a trip to the vets is the best step, good luck with her! :)
