blight outbreak map.
« on: June 26, 2009, 22:11 »
There was a site last year with a UK map with outbreaks on. I can't seem to find it this year, anyone point me in the right direction.

We had a near-miss on Tuesday, and I'm sure it's been humid enough for long enough today for it to be a worry.  :(

The Smith's period criteria was certainy met today and almost certainly will be tomorrow. If you look at those maps all the cases so far have been in old potato heaps and on volunteer potato plants. Clean up your plots. Hoe off all volunteers from last years crop.

Once a Smith's period occurs blight can develop. If you are in a sheltered spot or your potatoes are damp from irrigation your local conditions may be suitable for spread without a national warning.

(Smith's perion - two consecutave days in which the temperature stays above 10 degrees C and humidity is above 90% for more than 11 hours on each of those days)

Its My first year growing veg and the thought of blight striking my spuds is a nightmare. I really don't want to spray but i may have to :( The map that you refer to above does not include Northern Ireland so I refer to http://www.blightwatch.co.uk/content/bw-Home.asp where you get a great chart of the last 14 days of Smith periods and you can also get a history of previous years.

According to what i've read I should see signs of blight 12-14 days after the Smith period. Should I spray now or take a gamble and hope blight doesn't show??
