Herding chicken
« on: June 23, 2009, 23:33 »
Just before 10pm when it gets dark, I watch the chooks to see if they have all gone into the coop so I can lock it. Tonight while watching them, all were in the coop except bossy breeches and francais the light sussex. I watched as bossy went into the coop then came out again and seemed to round up francais into the coop. Then all seemed well for the night. Is this usual behaviour for the top chook?

Also when they had their treat of mixed corn my daughter was stroking bossy while she pecked, francais who was next to her pecked my daughters hand, she did this a few times as if she didn't like my daughter's hand there is this usual for the light sussex?

Tonight I decided that herding cats was easier than herding chickens!  God they were awkward tonight, everyone wanting to go in the wrong house.

My lot have an order of who goes to bed!

Usually my leghorns are first, then its most of the ex batts, except 2 (sylvia & delores).

the buffs next with the chicks (who sleep with my brahma hen), then adolf the cockerel (he has a wander around checking up). He sits on his crate surounded by his hareem. Then sylvia & delores do a joint patrol & finally go to bed themselves. There's a bit of a cerfuffle & loud singing type purring on the roosting bars as to who's where and then it's peace.

I find it very funny to watch.

I've just got back from holiday and while I was away Fanny a lovely and really nice natured ex-batt has started to sleep in a little rabbit hutch they all like to lay in.
I wouldn't mind but she gets so upset when I stick her in the big house - wings and feet out - starfish style!
She used to sleep in the favoured nest box, we used to call it Fannys bedroom.
None of this is any help to you, sorry! If it's any consolation ducklings are harder to put to bed. One of ours booted a mate in the face so she was sporting a web foot redmark for ages after putting them to bed. She still said she would do it again if we needed her too, mad! Nic

It's all to do with the pecking order, Jan and nowt to do with the breed.

Well looks like my cockerel is a bit mixed up then. Shouldn't he be last?
