STORING ONION SETS
« on: June 21, 2009, 22:44 »
In the garden centres they are currently selling onion sets at discount prices can these be stored for planting out next Spring and if so what is the best way to store them? If not can Sturion and Stuttgart be planted out in the Autumn under cloches to over winter.

Hi Kungfupanda (good film!)

Ive moved your post over here to GYO for everyone to join in  :D

I personally wouldnt get them for next year, they are cheap enough to buy when fresh and it isnt worth the depleted crop from using old sets...even if you could store them without rotting/drying up/away from the light/shooting

No idea about cloches and onions so will leave that to others to answer
"I think the carrot infinitely more fascinating than the geranium. The carrot has mystery. Flowers are essentially tarts. Prostitutes for the bees. There is, you'll agree, a certain je ne sais quoi oh so very special about a firm young carrot" Withnail and I

Just to echo peapod.

No they won't store until next year.

Japanese (winter) onions don't cost a bomb. You'd be far better off getting something that's designed to stand the winter.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

They will NOT store. They will try to grow anyway, get green shoots and die through lack of water & nutrients.

Sets are an onion that's alreay been pegged back in it's growth, it will not tolerate another year.
