Wet Chooks
« on: June 17, 2009, 19:44 »
Hi all! It's raining and although my 3 girls have shelter they've been out in it! The earth box has got somewhat damp and they're all delighting in a dirt bath! My White Star is a bedraggled black hole.....As I've only had them a couple of weeks I'm just a bit concerned as of course their feathers are thick and NOT waterproof. They've got a lovely warm dry coop for bed but could they catch cold????????

Panic not!  They are ok, this will make them clean and work their feathers.  They will enjoy the mud/dust which helps to keep their skin clean.  It is only in very sevear weather conditions you need to be concerned hail, snow and extended days of heavy rain.  They are wild animals and will cope.

I used to worry about this, but now know its not a problem, and not much I can do about it as as soon as I put them undercover they dash back out squarking at me for having interupted their fun! They are always fine in the morning, only thing I keep an eye on is their feed to make sure it isn't getting soaked.

My two looked very manky in the rain yesterday too, but I thought 'they wouldn't be wandering around in it if they weren't happy' Sure enough they looked fine and dandy this morning!  :)
