Hi all.

I am musing on gradually adding to my flock and trying to choose birds which will lay different egg colours. I love to see a rainbow in the egg box!

I currently have a Light Sussex (cream), a Bovans Nera (light brown), a Warren (mid brown) and a Skyline (blue). I've got 3 little Cream Legbar girls growing up and will keep one who will lay blue or green eggs.

I fancy adding white and very dark brown eggs, and was thinking about Leghorns and Welsummers, but the OH has asked if we can have a bird that lays speckled eggs. I am stumped.

So 2 questions for you:

(1) Do you know of a breed or hybrid that reliably lays speckled eggs?
(3) Are there any other shell colours I should be thinking about?

don't know about speckled but our white leghorn lays a BIG white egg.

My blackrock lays dark brown speckled eggs

Castle farm do a very nice Exchequer leghorn for white eggs.

Gold Duckwing Welsummers lay dark brown eggs.  I have two lines. One lays dark even brown and one lays a speckled brown egg. The speckled line always seems to have better hatch rate too.

Your Legbars will be blue, a black Araucana will be more olive green.  A French Wheaten maran will produce chocolate brown eggs, sorry can't help with the speckled !!

Thanks guys. Hensington, your speckled egg gold duckwing Welsummers sound great. Will you be selling eggs or chicks next year? Are you far far away?

If you have room in your incy I have some spare now, just pay the postage.
The eggs will throw the occasional silver duckwing welsummer too which are a lovely colour.

Thanks! But I don't have an incubator, just a very persistent broody  and she already has babies for this year, so I'll have to wait and cross fingers that we coincide next year
