First Earlies No Flower
« on: June 15, 2009, 19:49 »

Hi All
I planted my DOY first earlies at Easter.  So far they haven't even flowered yet people who planted their spuds after me are in full flower?
Will I get any spuds, should I try digging before they flower?
Cheers
Roy

You don't need to let early potatoes flower.  I started lifted mine this week.

My DOY also didn't flower, I had a furtle in the first bag was a bit disappointed.  Three soft ones, scabby and just 8 potatoes in all fromj three seed tats.  I have other bags which I have left longer and will see how they go.  I knew I should have stuck to Charlottes alone.  Hopefully the Charlottes will fair better.  Planted mine mid march.

I lifted some accent last week that hadn't flowered up.  gorgeous.  disappointed that half the seed didn't produce a plant but as all the main crop have think there was a problem with the seed in the first place so won't order them again from the same catalogue, but the spuds that grew were great.

I was advised not to lift my spuds until the row was in full flower.  I only got two flowers   Have been advised however that the plants may produce buds and then drop them very quickly which leaves you thinking you don't have any flowers on the plant.  Checked them out and they were still ready.

Its the first time Ive grown spuds (last years did nothing), and Ive had a quick dabble on the tinterweb and some sites recommend just letting the foliage die back on all spuds (as long as theres no frost risk of course)

What do others do?

Pea, I've never grown spuds before, ,my first earlies have big and healthy foliage...I've just dug up one plant and had about 12 lovely spuds...I can't show you a  PIC..cos  we've just scoffed them... :D

Some of them have flowered some of them haven't... ???

If you want nice "new" spuds you have to lift them before the foliage dies down.
