more advice please on breeds
« on: June 19, 2009, 12:44 »
So i have the two marans, and im on the lookout now for possibly two more, i definately want my barnie so rang the breeder yesterday and will be about another mth until they are ready which is brillant news, so now thinking about the other one, they guy i get mine of has some cochins ready, ive been reading about them, saying they arnt as good at laying eggs but to be honest they sound wonderful in that they are supposed to be very queit and very friendly and submissive to other birds making them easy to introduce, if anyone has them would this be true.      I thought this breed would be ideal for the children to have more hands on, the marans are great but are a wee bit flighty but they are slowly coming around.     Could i have your thoughts on this please,    nickyx

I have cochins and breed them too. I have blue, black and gold laced. They are gentle and friendly very sweet natured even the cockerels. I highly recommend them! The are quite large, particulary the black and buff colours, much bigger than the standard hybrid. The foot feathering needs a little extra care particulary in the winter. My girls lay wonderful eggs and go broody about once a year. They are very easy to introduce to other birds, however, because they are so docile the risk is they will be bullied by the established birds, so I wouldn't get a single cochin. :)
