HELP URGENTLY NEEDED FOR POSSIBLE GAPEWORM
« on: June 14, 2009, 00:06 »
I am new to keeping chickens, and have only had them one week.  One of my hens has been showing symptons: - Gurgling sound from her throat, sounds congested rattly, bubbles from her nose, and some nasal discharge.  I am very worried, and thought this may be gapeworm. I started a course for them of flubavet individually giving them it by a pinch on a grape daily, I have done this so far for three days.  She is still gurgling and wanted to know if those symptons are typical of gapeworm and how soon should I see an improvement.  I also noticed today ( I clean out their nest box daily) that there was some red blood matter in their poo, is this relevant.  I would really appreciate as much advice as anyone can give me, should I get a vet involved or is this something your advice could help me sort out.  She is drinking and eating still.

If you have a look at the information below by Aunt sally on the chicken information section it might help you.

http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=4348.0

Also on the chicken information pages is a poo chart - take a peek at that to see if any match yours - your chickens not yours!!!

Is there any bubbling from her eyes or is her face looking puffed up? If yes then this could be mycoplasma, although when 1 of mine had this eating was a problem.

If it was me I would get her to a chicken friendly vet as soon as possible.

Sorry I can't give you any more advice as I have not had gapeworm or blood in poo from my chickens so far. Joyfxx
Staffies are softer than you think.

Doris you chook has a respiratory infection, and needs antibiotics (Baytril) All your birds will need to be treated.
I see that you have recently bought them, I would go back and explain the situaton to your supplier, a good one will be more than willing to help, and will be concerned that they are ill. Are they hybrids? were they vaccinated against anything?
Now, depending on their age, their poops could be indicative of something else, do they look normal now to you?
Hope this helps! and welcome to the forum :)

Mmmm sounds a bit like mycoplasma to me, what I thought one of ours had, but she hasn't. I would definitely tell the person you got them from and I would say change them, they all their birds could be infected.  Like Foxy said, Baytril or Joyfull recommended Aueromycein.

Hope they get better soon

Hello Doris,

Welcome to hen keeping.

I don't know where you are (pop your location on your Profile), but try and find a good poultry vet.  Urgently!

Also, definitely tell your chicken supplier.  Respiratory disease can quickly spread and is potentially lethal - even with anti-biotics.

Hope all goes well.
