« on: April 06, 2007, 12:04 »
Recently got a blueberry Pioneer........... it looks healthy but i just noticed the baby leaves and some adult leaves are turning brown and crispy like.

Am not sure why at all, i keep it in doors, and its still in the pots that it arrived in. Any body out there please know why this is happenning.

Don't know for sure but I think they like it wet.  Very wet, and acidic too.  I reckon you need to get it hardened off and outside.

Yup, thought so, see http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/1000/1422.html

WG has it right; the ground needs to be VERY acidic or they'll flop, and they need a lot of ground moisture, almost boggy. If you can grow rhododendrons, then blueberries need it a bit more acidic. I throw handfuls of powdered sulfur worked into the ground several times a season, along with any pine needles I can find, and keep it evenly watered.  They're not so big on fertilizers provided they have the acid soil and water. Also, check your water to see if it's at all alkaline.

yes, use rainwater - rainwater is naturally slightly acidic (its the carbon dioxide you know  ) but your tap water may be hard, and contain dissolved minerals that make it slightly basic (alkaline)

You can still keep your Blueberry in a pot if you want to.  Just pot it on to a bigger pot with ericacious compost.   Mulch over the surface with pine needles or bark chips because the roots of blueberries grow close to the surface and dry out quickly.  If you don't have powder of sulpher then you can also use sequestered iron in sachets.   Since your blueberry has had a bit of a shock it may be sensible to remove any flower buds this year to give the plant a chance to grow more leaves and new stems from the bottom so it will recover.   Keep outside as blueberries need a period of cold weather and are fairly frost hardy.

Fresh chicken poo will be death to your blueberries. It is so strong in nitrogen (ammonia) that it will burn the roots, so just use older, well rotted as a mulch. Or, make a manure tea out of fresh chicken poo and use it to water the ground around the plant. For the tea, dump a shovel full of fresh poo into a bucket of water with a lid, leave for 2-3 months, pour off a bit of the (stinky!) liquid into a water can and add more water to the water can.
