Me neither.  I spent a lovely day out with my OH instead.  But I have spent the last three out of four days on the plot, so was commanded to have a day off

I did make a pond on the plot this weekend though, so I don't feel too guilty about today!

I wish I could have a pond....but Leeds council -in their ultimate wisdom- reckon that it would be dangerous.
I would like the frogs to eat the slugs!

Even flower growing is frowned upon by LCC!!

I spent the last 3 mornings at the plot but today the missus came with me and I took the camping stove and cooked up sausage and eggs stuck in malty buns washed down with coffee :)

Great day......

If you just have an area of permanent plants, a rocky area is ideal, you can just bury a couple of small buckets and keep filled with water and make sure they are shaded by leaves of other plants and you will get frogs or toads (I don't know the difference but they both eat slugs). I don't know how long it would take either but it would happen. You don't need a pond.
first there is a mountain then there is no mountain then there is

My garden is full of frogs and we gave them plenty of spaces to hibernate in peace!
I just hope that they are hungry now cos' the slugs are arriving en masse!
Do not underestimate the therapeutic values of weeding!
1 dog, 2 children, 3 good reasons not to spread poison!

I've seen it done with childrens sand castle buckets. About 5 inches deep. I'm sure a washing up bowl would do but it is a bit wide and you may have difficulty in providing shade.

I'm thinking about the rhubarb patch, or some globe artichokes, big leaves keep em nice and cool.

Well, I say pond....

It's a bath.  Sunk into the ground, put a liner (cheap offcut) in to cover the holes, banked up some earth around the sides, and put stones around the top (also some rocks in the water so the toads and frogs can climb out).  I've got some old tyres around as well, so we'll have a little seating area under the shade of a hazel tree.  I'll post a pic tomorrow!  Just need to wait for some critters to come and live in it now...

oh yes mel, you are right to go for a pond, A large body of water like a bath full won't heat up so much like a small bowl full.

Just if you're not allowed a pond there are other ways.

Gaffer, check out the BBC Gardener's World website in the past hosts section. Geoff Hamilton does an old video clip of a small pond that might be of interest to you. His is a tad larger than you might want, but the basic idea is there for you.  :D
