some questions for a learner
« on: June 08, 2009, 10:44 »
1.
I've got some lettuce that i've been growing and been taking the odd leaf here and there as its grown but i've noticed how its grown up and up and has now produced a seed head, i though lettuces stayed quite stout. What have i been doing wrong or is this just what happens. I've added a pic for you to take a look at, how it was and how it is now.

2.
Bought a grapevine a good few months ago and its been growing quite nicely in a pretty big pot which i intend to keep it in. But i've noticed how the weight of the foliage has made the shoot bend down, is this ok for a grapevine or shoot i support it to a cane? Again i've provided a photo to take a look at.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I thought (I'm new to this lotty lark so I could be very wrong) that you have left the lettuce to long, you should have harvested it by now, I had two do similiar but we had a huge glut of lettuce and we couldnt eat it fast enough

As regards the lettuce, what variety is it? Unless it's a "cut and come" again type, it's far better to let it heart up and then harvest the lot.

Take what you can off it now, it won't produce any more.

Be sure to make sucessive sowings every couple of weeks or so to ensure a continual supply.

Don't know much about grape vines, so I'll step aside for someone else.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Grape vines generally do best with suppost in my experience.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

the lettus looks like a lolo rosso (or the green equivalent)
it is a cut and come again but they dont go on forever and will eventualy go to seed
which yours has

letting 'em dry out too often is usually a good prompt for them to bolt and seed.

Your vine needs some support Brad - they won't grow well without it. A bamboo will do the trick - place carefully close to the vine trying not to upset or break the roots, and use twists, string or cable ties to loosely attach to the support.

One of mine broke lose and bent double in this weekend's rain and wind....so had to get up the ladder to sort it out.

My experience is that unless they are decades old, they will always need support where they are growing ;)
